The Rainier Mountaineer Classic began in 1987 and has continued to this day. The Classic has drawn competitors from around the state. Teams from all corners of the state have traveled to Rainier to compete. Teams from as far away as Ilwaco, Nooksack Valley, Lake Roosevelt and Columbia Burbank have done battle in Rainier. Numerous state medal winners have competed at the Classic and there are no signs that it will slow down any time soon.
In its beginning years, the Classic was an 8 man bracket tournament with teams coming from all classifications to compete. In 2001, the Classic was changed into a 16 man bracket tournament focusing mostly on 1A teams. To this day, it continues to be one of the premier A/B tournaments west of the Cascades.
Recently, a former Rainier wrestler gave his life while serving in Iraq. Sgt. Justin Norton, gave his life defending what he believed in and supporting a country he loved. It is in Justin's honor that we have proudly renamed our tournament the Sgt. Justin Norton Memorial.
